If the compression is good rebuild the injectors.Crack an injector line nut loose while its running to see which cylinder is missfiring and to see if it quits smoking.4320 diesel

does it hit operating temp before you put it on liquid because if not this will freeze the regulator unless you use vapor untill it hits operating temp otherwise i dont knowJd2cylman

Depending on serial numbers of the 840, it could be a converted early 820 which had smaller injectors and pumps, plus different combustion chamber design. Thus the difference in green dash 820s and black dash 820s. Horsepower went from 67 to 75. All 830s had the bigger hp. The 830 & 840 have exactly the same engine physically and externally.Jd2cylman

Does it use oil? My 830 had excessive crankshaft side thrust at some point in it’s life resulting in both inner snap rings retaining the piston pins popping out and grooving the cylinder walls very badly. To compensate, the previous owner reset the fuel rack to wide open. After a fresh overhaul, the tractor really seems anemic, but runs perfect with no smoke at all under full load. I would like to dyno it some day to see what hp is, but it pulls my 5-16s ok in 2nd gear.oldmillmac

Back in late 80s and early 90s the TWO CYLIDER CLUB had about 20-25 of these JD Day films available on VCR….from eary 30s to 1960DavidSmith

Linda wanted to know if she had a Hawkeye Riding Cultivator, the first tool made by John Deere with a seat for riding. She wanted to see a photo of it.John Deere Archives has only one illustration of this machine. It is shown on page 205 of Genuine Value , published published by Deere in 2000.
The same illustration is found on page 7 of John Deere Tractors and Equipment Volume One 1837-1959 appears to be slightly clearer. Over 50,000 of these books have been sold so it should be easy to find one from a John Deere collector.

These tend to vary some. If you have the original hood and seat and they are good condition it really helps the value. Do you have a matching deck or any other equipment with it? I would think in most cases they will bring $750 to $1200.appraiser

I think 2 of the most knowledgeable people on horse drawn equipment is Marvin Huber and Don McKinley from Quincy, Illinois. They have a very nice collection and have done a lot of restoration. They are also very detail oriented.
