Just finished an engine job on a early series Diesel 4020. Hooked it up to a haybine to test that machine and I’ve got a knock when the PTO is engaged under load. No sound if the PTO is turning , but nothing attached. I’m thinking It may be a thrust washer, or spacer out, but before I re-split the tractor (ugh) i thought I’d ask around…

    thanks,

problem solved.. the knock was from the U joint action on the haybine. It was banging the gear lash on the PTO drive train. Something about the accel and deaccel of tightly bent U joints.

Had the same problem a feww years ago. Took it to the dealer who split her, rebuilt the clutch, changed release bearings etc. Quite a bill. Took her out in the feild and the noise was still there. Dealer then split her again, and when I was there we found brass on the gear( from the synchros which have been gone for many years). It was good for a few months, then the noise came back. Now I at least Know what it is I just ran her like that. Been going for about 3000 hrs.

The acoustics of something knocking can be a PIA to track down at times.

I had a ’66 Chevelle that had a tapping sound that sounded for all the world that that it came from behind the dash. I took the dash loose and drove around the block only to find that the tapping was from the sun visor. With the dash hanging on the steering column, it changed the acoustics enough that I could tell where the sound actually came from. 🙂
